How we built Maza, gently

A perfect three days in Mandalika

Three days is just enough to fall for Mandalika — long enough to find your rhythm, short enough that every hour counts. Here’s how we’d spend a perfect long weekend on Lombok’s south coast.

There’s a particular kind of quiet on this stretch of coastline. The crowds of Bali feel a world away, the roads run between rice fields and empty beaches, and the days seem to stretch a little longer than they should. After years of welcoming guests to Maza, this is the itinerary we keep coming back to — unhurried, a little wild, and built around the light.

Day one — arrive slowly

Resist the urge to plan too much on your first day. Drop your bags, change into something loose, and let the island set the pace. The beach is a four-minute walk from the villas, and the morning is the best time to have it almost to yourself.

By late afternoon, head up to one of the clifftop warungs for a cold drink as the sun drops. The sky here does something extraordinary at dusk — all amber and rose over the water.

Most beaches here stay empty even in high season — bring water and your own shade.

Day two — into the water

This is the day to get in the sea. The south coast is a paradise for beginner surfers, with gentle, forgiving breaks that are perfect for a first lesson. We can arrange a local instructor to meet you at the beach at dawn, before the wind picks up.

If surfing isn’t your thing, a private boat will take you out to snorkel the reefs and drop anchor at a hidden cove for lunch. A few things worth doing while you’re here:

  • Sunrise surf — the water is glassy and the lineup empty before 7am.
  • Snorkel the reefs — visibility is best on a calm, incoming tide.
  • Sunset sail — pour a drink and watch the light fade over the bay.

“You don’t come to Mandalika to tick things off a list. You come to slow down enough that the island can show you something.”— Made Arjuna, Guest Concierge

Day three — the island, inland

Spend your last morning away from the coast. The villages inland are where Lombok’s culture really lives — weaving cooperatives, morning markets, and roadside stalls selling the sweetest pineapple you’ll ever taste. Our team can pair you with a local guide who’ll take you somewhere you’d never find alone.

Back at the villa, end the way you started: barefoot, unhurried, watching the light go soft over the water. Three days is never quite enough — but it’s enough to know you’ll be back.

Before you go

Everything in this guide can be arranged by your host before you arrive, or decided over breakfast once you’re here. Just tell us how you like to travel, and we’ll shape the rest around it.
